Péter Zombola was born in Budapest in 1983.
He attended the Béla Bartók Secondary Music
School in Budapest as a pupil of Miklós Kocsár
and Miklós Csemiczky. He then continued his
studies in composition at the Liszt Academy
of Music in Budapest under Zoltán Jeney and
György Orbán. In 2003, he won 2nd Prize at the
Semmering International Summer Academy’s
Composition Competition and, in 2004, 2nd
Prize at the Liszt Academy’s Composition
Competition. In 2004, an ex aequo 2nd Prize
was also given to his piece at the István Vántus
Composers’ Competition in Szeged. He was
a three-time recipient of the Zoltán Kodály Scholarship in 2007, 2008, and
2009. In 2006, he obtained his degree in composition, graduating with
distinction, and the following year attained his teacher training diploma,
passing with honors, as a teacher of musical analysis. Several of his works
have been premiered at both Hungarian and international music festivals,
and he is also a regular composer of music for film and theater. He took
his doctoral DLA in composition and music theory at the Liszt Academy of
Music between 2006 and 2009, graduating in 2010. Between 2004 and 2013, he
taught at Budapest’s University of Dramatic and Film Arts’ Faculty of Singing
and Music. He was the artistic leader of the Hungarian Radio Symphony
Orchestra and Choir between 2012 and 2017. Since 2009, he has also worked
as an associate professor at the Károly Eszterházy University of Eger, as well
as at the University of Debrecen since 2018. He is a multi-award-winner, with
prizes including (but not limited to): the Junior Prima Prize (2012); the Erkel
Prize (2015); the ‘For Hungarian Science’ Prize from the Hungarian Academy
of Sciences (2017), and the Bartók–Pásztory Award (2020).
