Péter Nógrádi was born in Budapest in 1952.
Early on he studied music theory with György
Geszler and, following an initial detour from
music to graduate from the Ybl Miklós College of
Architecture and Civil Engineering, he returned
to his musical studies to pursue composition
with Pál Károlyi and István Fekete Győr. He
received his MA in 1984 from the Liszt Academy
of Music in Budapest under the tutelage of József
Soproni. His Hungarian Requiem won the 1st Prize
in 2006 at the competition commemorating the
50th Anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revo
lution. His major commissions include, among
others, his Esztergom Cantata commissioned by the town of Esztergom for the
inauguration of the Maria Valeria Bridge, and his work, Seasons, written for
the Hungarian Radio. He has taught piano and music history at the Béla
Bartók Music School in Vác and at the Music School in Törökbálint. He is now
retired and resides in Budaörs. He is a member of the Hungarian Composers’
Union and, since 2007, has been a member of the Hungarian Academy of Arts.
In 2008, he received the Erkel Prize award for outstanding composers and
musicians.
