Miklós Sugár studied at the Liszt Academy
of Music in Budapest where he majored in
conducting (1974–1978) and composition (1975–
1980) under András Kórodi and Emil Petrovics.
Between 1978 and 1984, he was the conductor
of the Honvéd Art Ensemble Symphony Orches
tra. From 1978 until 1991, he was an assistant
lecturer at the Academy of Dramatic and Cine
matographic Arts in Budapest. He was also a
member of the Association of Hungarian Mu
sicians’ Young Composers’ Group, holding the
position of General Secretary from 1983 until 1987.
Between 1984 and 1988, conducted the Békés
csaba Symphony Orchestra, going on to work at Hungarian Radio’s Classical
Music Department from 1988 until 1990. By 1991, he had become manager of the
National Philharmonic, and that same year would co-found the EAR Ensemble
for electro-acoustic research for contemporary music. Between 1991 and 1999,
he was conductor of the Alba Regia Symphony Orchestra. A multi-prize-award
winner, he has received numerous prizes, including: the Szirmai Albert Founda
tion Prize (1981); a Kodály Scholarship (in 1984 and again 1985), and 3rd Prize at
the Budapest Spring Festival’s International Composers’ Competition. In 1989,
he was awarded the special prize at the Arezzo Choir Composers’ Competition, as
well as the KÓTA Prize for Gloria at the Hungarian Radio Composers’ Competition.
In both 1991 and 1992, he was awarded a scholarship from the Soros Foundation;
received 3rd Prize at the János Neumann Society’s Electro-Acoustic Composers’
Competition; the Erkel Prize (1992); the Lánczos-Szekfü Foundation Prize (1993),
and was s three-time recipient of the Les atelier UPIC Scholarship in Paris (1989,
1990 and 1994). In 1999, he was also awarded a scholarship from the Akademie
der Künste in Berlin, as well as one from GRAME in Lyon. In 1992, he received
the Artisjus Prize a total of fourteen times (both individually and with the EAR
Ensemble), and in 2001 was awarded the Vox Electronica Prize (with the EAR
Ensemble), and the Bartók–Pásztory Award in 2010.
