Biography

László Sándor was born in Budapest in 1975.
He studied violin teaching and chamber music
at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest,
graduating in 1998. During his early student
years, he was a self-taught composer, and
one of the founders of the Danubia Youth
Symphony Orchestra (later Danubia Symphony
Orchestra), where he worked as a violinist
and artistic adviser. He arranged numerous
chamber concerts with the participation of
the orchestra’s musicians, until transferring
to the Academy’s composition class in 2012.
His teacher in the subject was Zoltán Jeney. In
2021, he graduated with summa cum laude a DLA Doctoral degree, which he
undertook at the Liszt Academy of Music under the supervision of János Bali.
His area of research was that of 15th-century music, specifically the motets
of Dufay. He has won numerous prizes in both Hungarian and international
composition competitions. A multi-award-winner at the New Hungarian
Composition Forum in Budapest (UMZF) from 2011 to 2017, he was also
among the prize-winners at the 62nd International Rostrum of Composers in
Tallinn with his orchestral piece Et transfiguratus est performed by the Hungarian
Radio Symphony Orchestra. He often gives lectures on medieval music at the
Budapest Music Center Library, as well as lecturing part-time at the Péter
Pázmány Catholic University of Budapest. Additionally, he is a frequent
participant in Hungarian contemporary music events, often giving dedicated
concerts. In 2019, he was a New National Excellence Program Scholarship
recipient. His music focuses on the spiritual aspects of composition, and he
frequently uses liturgical materials and plainchant melodies and incorporates
medieval techniques into his compositional methods. He has been a member
of the Hungarian Composers’ Union since 2006.
