Biography

Krisztina Megyeri was born in 1974 in
Budapest to a Hungarian mother and Russian
father. She has studied prodigiously, starting
out with piano and composition at the Béla
Bartók Music Secondary School in Budapest
with Mariann Ábrahám and Miklós Kocsár, later
graduating from the Liszt Academy of Music
in Budapest with an MA in Composition as a
pupil of Attila Bozay, János Vajda, and Zoltán
Jeney. From 1999 until 2001, she attended the
Conservatoire National Supérieur de Lyon,
and following that went to the Conservatoire
of Boulogne-Billancourt in Paris, where she
graduated as a piano accompanist-vocal coach. Yet further study took her to the
Université Paris-VIII Saint-Denis, where she undertook her MA in Musicology
and Aesthetics, graduating in 2006; her Thesis was on Peter Eötvös’s opera
Angels in America. She also holds a DMA in Composition (2013) from the Liszt
Academy of Music on the dramaturgy of Peter Eötvös’s opera Love and Other
Demons. A multi-award-winner, she has received numerous prizes, including:
the Unesco-Aschberg (IMEB, Bourges) electroacoustic music prize and
scholarship; 2nd Prize in the Zoltán Kodály Competition (1999); 1st Prize (2006)
and 3rd Prize (2008) in the István Vántus Composer’s Competition; 1st Prize
in the Simeonis International Composer’s Competition (2011). In addition,
she has been the recipient of several major scholarships, including the French
Government Scholarship (1999); the Hungarian Eötvös Scholarship (2005);
the Fondation Natexis Banques Populaires (2005), and the Zoltán Kodály
Scholarship (2007–2009). Her music has been commissioned and performed
extensively throughout Europe and the United States, including at the
Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris (Le jardin étranger, 2003), the Fondation Royaumont,
by the Orchestre National de Lorraine (MétéoRites, 2005) the Ensemble SIC,
Peter Eötvös, and has been recorded by the Radio France, SWR, and both
Hungarian and Finnish Radios. Her first opera, Frühlings Erwachen (2018) and
Nousnoyons-nous (2003) were recently premiered in Budapest. From 2002 until
2008, she worked as a teacher and piano accompanist in Paris, before moving
back to Budapest. She is active as a composer, musicologist, and pianist, and
continues to teach – primarily at Biatorbágy Music School – a position she has
held since 2013.
