Iván Madarász was born in Budapest in 1949.
He studied at Budapest’s Béla Bartók Secondary
Music School followed by the Liszt Academy
of Music under István Szelényi and Endre
Szervánszky. He received his undergraduate
degree from the latter in 1971, with distinction.
In 1974, he became an assistant lecturer at the
Pécs department of the Music Academy. Then,
from 1980, he undertook the same role at the
Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, and in
2000 qualified as a lecturer; since 2002, he has
held the position of acting professor. He has
won numerous awards, including the Albert
Szirmay Prize (1972); the Erkel Prize (1992); the Bartók–Pásztory Award (1998);
the Knight of Cross from the Order of Merit of the Hungarian Republic (2005),
and the Kossuth Prize (2016). He has been a board member of Artisjus since
1990, and chairman of the board since 2015. He was also the founding member
of the Hungarian Composers’ Union and remains a member of the board. He
has also been a member of the Musical College of the National Cultural Fund
over two terms and was a DJ for the Hungarian Radio from 2017 until 2020.
His compositions have been played at the World New Music Days as part of
the International Society for Contemporary Music, and his sextet, Sheol, was
performed in Sweden, then at Embroidered Sounds in Yokohama. His works are
regularly performed at major festivals across Hungary, such as the Budapest
Autumn Festival, the Mini Festival of the Hungarian Society of Art Music, the
István Vántus Contemporary Music Days in Szeged, the Music of Our Days as
well as the Guitar Festival in Esztergom. As a member of the EAR Ensemble,
his live electroacoustic works are often performed at their concerts.
