András Soós graduated from the Liszt Acade
my of Music in Budapest, first, as a double
bassist, then in 1977 as a music education
teacher, then finally with joint majors in music
education and choral conducting in 1980. Since
1976, he has been a soloist and choir member of
Schola Hungarica. Between 1980 and 1982, he
was conductor of the Budapest String Orches
tra. From 1980 until 1990, he was a member and
conductor of the 180 Group (180‑as Csoport) – an
ensemble which specializes in contemporary
music. He undertook a DLA in church music
(the title of his doctoral thesis was Composing
Techniques in Guillaume Dufay: Missa Sancti Jacobi). His professors were Imre
Földes, Tibor Szabó, László Dobszay, István Párkai, András Kórodi, and
Ervin Lukács. Outside of his regular classes, his personal and artistic world
view was shaped by such influential masters as György Kurtág, Albert Simon,
Zoltán Jeney, and László Vidovszky. In 1992, he established the Contemporary
Music Workshop and would organize a number of concerts every year at nontraditional venues such as museums and churches. As a composer, he has
been active on the Hungarian contemporary classical music scene since 1980.
His major works consist largely of contemporary church music works, vocal,
choral, and instrumental pieces. Since 1992, he has been an associate professor
at the Church Music Department of the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest.
His main subjects are focused on church music repertoire and conducting;
he is also the conductor of the department’s choir. He is a member of the
Hungarian Society of Church Music and the Hungarian Composers’ Union.
