Életrajz

Zsolt Serei was born in 1954 in Takácsi. His musical studies commenced early with the piano. He then moved on to the trombone, and from 1968 until 1972 studied with György Zilcz and József Nagy. His formal compositional training commenced in Győr under István Fekete Győr. He went on to attend the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, receiving his degree in composition in 1978 as a student of Endre Szervánszky and Emil Petrovics; he also studied conducting (1982) under András Kórodi and Ervin Lukács. He also studied under Zoltán Jeney and Albert Simon. He has been a member of the New Music Studio since 1978 as a performer, conductor, and composer. Since 1986, he has taught at the Liszt Academy of Music’s Composition Department. In 1989, he founded the instrumental group Componensemble, which has become one of the most significant bases for contemporary music-making in Hungary. Componensemble has given Budapest premieres of pieces by such greats as Pierre Boulez, György Kurtág, and Morton Feldman. Their repertoire includes international and Hungarian contemporary chamber works, and they have made CD, radio, and TV recordings of works by Gyula Csapó, János Decsényi, Barnabás Dukay, Zoltán Jeney, György Kurtág, József Sári, László Sáry, József Soproni, András Szőllősy, László Tihanyi, and László Vidovszky, among others. As the ensemble’s conductor, he has participated in numerous festivals, in cluding: the Music Biennale in Zagreb, the Warsaw Autumn Festival, and the Melos Festival. In 1991, he conducted Pierre Boulez’s Le marteau sans maître and Dérive with the Dutch Nieuw Ensemble. His chamber piece Rege was performed in Brussels in 1982, and his orchestral work, Calyx, was played in Budapest at the ISCM Festival in 1986. In 1999, he won the Soros Foundation’s Music Award. His other prizes include: the Erkel Prize (2003); the Artisjus Prize (2003); the Bartók– Pásztory Award (2010), and the Artisjus Plaque (2012). He has been a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences Széchenyi Academy of Arts since 2014.
