Endre Olsvay started out studying piano and violin, then commencing composition studies with Miklós Kocsár in 1979. He attended the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest as a student of Attila Bozay, graduating in 1986; he then undertook further study under Edit Hambalkó at the Academy’s Teacher Training Institute, majoring in piano, and received his teacher training diploma in 1988. He was a member of the Young Composers’ Group until 1993 and was a three-time recipient of the prestigious Zoltán Kodály Scholarship from 1991 until 1994. He has been a frequent participant at numerous festivals and courses, including in Darmstadt, Poland, Szombathely, to name but a few. In 1993, he joined the EAR Ensemble as a keyboard player and composer. He was awarded a scholarship to spend a month in Berlin to compose a new experimental piece, which was performed during Berlin’s Budapest Cultural Week. A number of his compositions have been released, most notably under the Hungaroton label, including a CD entitled Tarn which includes nine of his key works. He is a member of the Hungarian Composers’ Union, of the Hungarian Music Society, and of Artisjus. Since 2010, he has been a member of the Hungarian Academy of Arts. In conjunction with his work as a composer, he is also active as a teacher, and since 1986, has taught at the higher musical education institute in Győr and from 1995 until 2005, he was head of the institute’s Music Theory Department. He teaches both theoretical subjects such as analysis, solfeggio, composition, and score reading, as well as chamber music, piano music literature and seminars in a wide range of other musical areas. He has taught at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest since 2001, and formerly at the Béla Bartók Music Secondary School in Budapest from 1993 until 2002. He is widely published, including a concise monography on his former professor Attila Bozay, as well as innumerable articles, reviews, and essays for various publications.
