Miklós Mohay studied composition with Sán
dor Szokolay, Sándor Balassa, József Soproni
and Attila Bozay at the Liszt Academy of Music
in Budapest graduating in 1984 with a degree in
composition and music theory teaching. From
1985 until 2001, he taught solfeggio, music
theory, score reading, and musical analysis at the
music department of Eötvös Loránd University’s
Pedagogical Faculty. The following year, until
2011, he also taught at Debrecen University. At
the time of writing, he is a professor of music
theory at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest,
where he has taught since 1998. In 2004, he took
his DLA Doctoral Degree there writing his dissertation on festival masses by
Mozart; since 2007, he has been head of the Music Theory Department. He
delivers regular lectures and courses for doctoral students, and as a composer,
is primarily active in the field of choral music. A multi-award-winner, he has
won over fourteen prizes with his choral works, both in Hungary and abroad.
He was invited to compose a festival piece for the prestigious occasion of the
1600th anniversary of St Martin for Florilège Vocal de Tours, in France. He also
won the Ágoston Trefort Memorial Leaf at his former University (1996), as well
as the Benedek Istvánffy Prize from the Hungarian Composers’ Union (2001),
the Prize of the Hungarian Choral Association (2006), and the Erkel Prize from
the Hungarian State (2007). He has compiled and edited a book on the short
essays of Lajos Bárdos and, alongside Miklós Szabó, wrote a comprehensive
book on the studies of eminent musicologist Ernő Lendvai. It is published
in English, Hungarian, German, and, latterly, Japanese, following Lendvai’s
unexpected death. He is also active in the church music arena: he played cello
at the Matthias Church Orchestra for almost thirty years, starting in 1976, and
is currently the choral conductor at St. Ladislaus Parish Church in Budapest.
The choir performs key masses by Haydn and Mozart, among others, within
liturgical services. He is a member of the Hungarian Academy of Arts.
