Lajos Huszár began his studies at the Music
School of Hódmezővásárhely, learning piano
with Lajos Berei. His first introduction to
composition, music theory, and music history
came from Béla Steiner. He continued his
studies at the Secondary School of Music
in Szeged, where he was a pupil of István
Vántus. During his time in Szeged (1963–1967)
his most important musical experiences
came from opera performances at the local
theater, conducted by Viktor Vaszy. He studied
composition under Endre Szervánszky and
Zsolt Durkó at the Liszt Academy of Music in
Budapest, obtaining his degree in 1973. In 1975, he continued his studies at
the Santa Cecilia Academy in Rome, under Goffredo Petrassi. Between 1973
and 1984, he taught at Szeged’s Secondary School of Music. He divided the
following years between the Academy of Theatrical Arts in Budapest and the
Secondary School of Music in Békéscsaba. In 1989, he returned to Szeged,
where he continued to teach at the Secondary school of Music, and later at the
Music Department of the University of Szeged, where he was a professor of
music theory, music history, and composition. He officially retired in 2008 but
continued to teach through retirement at both the Nyíregyháza College and
at the Béla Bartók Music Secondary in Budapest until 2013. He was a member
of the Doctoral Committee at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest for ten
years, and holds memberships at numerous different institutions, including:
the Hungarian Composers’ Union, the Hungarian Company for Music, and
the Hungarian Academy of Arts. A multi-award-winner, he has received prizes
including: the Erkel Prize (1994), Bartók–Pásztory Award (2003), and the
Artisjus Prize (2014).
