Armand Tóth was born in Kaposvár in 1955.
He studied at the Liszt Academy of Music in
Budapest as well as in Weimar under Kurt Masur
and Max Pommer, later, he would go on to study
conducting at the Ottorino Respighi Academy
in Rome, under Julius Kalmar and Erél Acél.
His teachers have included: Jenő Keuler, Oszkár
Frank, Melinda Kistétényi, István Matuz, Attila
Bozay and Antal Jancsovics. He began his career
as a music staff member at the Hungarian State
Opera House from 1977 until 1986. After that, he
became the first conductor of the Gergely Csiky
Theater in Kaposvár, as well as the Nagykanizsa
Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Choir. From 1992 until 1998, he was the
musical director of the Miskolc National Theater. Since 2004, he has been the
musical director of the My Opera Project on the Budapest IBS Stage as well as at the
Merlin Theater. He has conducted ballet and opera performances for numerous
ensembles, including: the Győr Ballet, the Gyula Castle Theater, the Danube
Symphony Orchestra, the Savaria Symphony Orchestra, the MATÁV Symphony
Orchestra, the Budapest Concert Winds, and the Budapest Choir. His name is also
associated with the founding of various key ensembles and festivals, including:
the Gaudium Wind Company (1990), the Erzsébet Sinfonietta, and the Oratorio
Choir (1996), the National Meeting of the Opera Departments in Miskolc (1993).
From 1989 until 2014, he was the executive director of the Hungarian Society of
Music Performers. He has won numerous awards as a conductor, including: the
Baden-Württenberg (D) 1st Prize (1990) and the Euro Muziek Parade Groningen
(NL) (1991). And as a composer, he has garnered prizes from such competitions
as: the Jubilee Liszt Competition (1986); the Hungarian State Opera House-MTV
Opera Competition (1989); the International Church Music Competition Zalau
(RO, 1992); the Yokohama Trombones Society (1996); the Hungarian Musicians
Forum (2000); the Millennium Composers’ Competition (2006); the Composer
MAOE Composition Competition (2006), and the MÜPA Music Competition
(2020).
