Gyula Fekete

Biography

Gyula Fekete is Professor of Composition at
the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, having
been on the faculty since 1997. He has been the
Head of Department since 2012, and since 2015
has been the Vice President of Research and
International Affairs, representing the Liszt
Academy of Music in Budapest in AEC and
numerous other international conferences. He
is a lecturer at the University of Theater, Film,
and Television in Budapest. He received a Doc
torate in Composition from Northwestern
University, Illinois, in 1996, and an MA from
the Chicago Music College of Roosevelt Uni
versity in 1993; he also holds a degree in composition and music theory from
the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. He has earned multiple awards
including the 1996 William T. Faricy Award, and the Fulbright Scholarship for
the academic year of 1994–1995. In 2000, he won the One Act Opera Category
of the Hungarian State Opera’s Competition commemorating the thousandth
anniversary of the foundation of the State of Hungary, with his opera, The
Redeemed Town. The opera premiered at the Hungarian State Opera in 2002.
In 2011, he wrote the opera, Excelsior! Liszt Ferenc Goes to Heaven, for the Liszt
bicentennial, which was commissioned and produced by the Budapest Spring
Festival and the Hungarian State Opera. His first CD was released in 2001
by the Classical Record Company, Hungaroton. He has received numerous
commissions from the Hungarian State Opera, Budapest Chamber Symphony,
Chicago Pro Musica, and The Music Group of Philadelphia. He is a board
member of the Hungarian Composers’ Union and president of the Hungarian
Art Music Society. In 2011, he received the Erkel Prize and in 2012 the Bartók–
Pásztory Award. He has worked for numerous theater and film productions
in Hungary.
