László Dubrovay started his music studies at
the age of five, learning piano with his father; he
would later continue under the tutelage of Vik
tor Vaszy. At the Béla Bartók Secondary School
of Music, he was taught by István Szelényi, and
at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, he
studied composing under Ferenc Szabó and
Imre Vincze; he graduated with honors in 1966.
From 1964, Dubrovay taught at the Academy
of Theater and Film in Budapest under the
guidance of Kálmán Nádasdy. From 1971 to 1972,
he worked as repetiteur of the Hamburgische
Staatsoper. Between 1972 and 1974, he continued
his studies with Karlheinz Stockhausen as a scholarship holder of the DAAD.
It was during those years that he became familiarized with the musical capa
bilities of electronic studios, as well as the latest results of studies into sound
research and various compositional techniques. He took courses in electronic
music with Hans-Ulrich Humpert. From 1974 to 1975, he received a commission
from the Westdeutscher Rundfunk, Cologne, which resulted in his electronic
composition, Sóhaj (Sigh), recorded at their electronic studios. He has given
lectures in both English and German all over the world, including in Reykjavik
(Iceland) Taegu (South Korea), and La Jolla (USA). Between 1975 and 2011, he
taught music theory at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. Since 1991, he
has been a member of the board of the Hungarian Chamber of Music, and from
1997 to 2013 he was a member of the board of the Hungarian Society of Music.
He joined the Hungarian Academy of Arts in 2011, where he was a board member
until 2017. He has also been awarded numerous prizes in the recognition of his
career, including: the Erkel Prize (1985); the Hungarian Radio Critics’ Choice
Award (1987); the Hungarian Radio Niveau (1995); the Bartók–Pásztory Award
(1996); the Merited Artist Award (1998); the Award for Hungarian Art (2001), and
the Kossuth Prize (2013). He has also won several international composition
contests, such as Szczecin (1973), Triest (1974), Linz (1992), and Budapest (1997).
