Ilona Dobszay-Meskó graduated from the
Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest having
studied composition and orchestral conducting.
In 2003, she founded the Ventoscala Symphony
Orchestra and is its principal conductor and
producer. Since 2001, she has worked at the Leó
Weiner Secondary School of Music in Budapest –
first as a piano accompanist (2001–2009), then
teaching composition (2006–2014). Since 2013,
she has also taught composition at Budapest’s
Béla Bartók Secondary School of Music and is
now the conductor and leader of its symphony
orchestra. Since 2016, she has worked as a
mentor to students in teacher training. She is a Presidential Member of the
Hungarian Composers’ Union and a member of the István Vántus Society. As a
piano accompanist, she has partnered with the Institute of Theatre Arts faculty
of the University of Theater and Film Arts in Budapest, the Opera Studio of
Budapest’s Liszt Academy, and with world-renowned artists at the Radio
France Festival in Montpellier. Her professors in composition have been János
Vajda, Miklós Kocsár, Miklós Csemiczky and Emil Petrovics. In 2001, she won
the best performer award at the Kincses Composing Competition (organized
by the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest) and two years later went on to
win first prize in composition at the same competition. In 2002, she won
first prize at the István Vántus Composing Competition for young Hungarian
Composers. She was also awarded a scholarship to take part in József Sári’s
composition masterclasses in Austria, as well as those of Betsy Jolas in France.
In 2004, she got the opportunity through the Liszt Academy of Music to travel
to New York to perform her piece, Ashed Lovers, at the Juilliard School. In 2017,
she represented Hungary at the ISCM World New Music Days in Vancouver
with her composition for mixed choir entitled Choral. In 2019, she won a 3-year
scholarship from the Hungarian Academy of Arts for creative artists.
