József Bujtás

April 8, 1947

Biography

József Bujtás was born in Pápa in 1947. He
pursued both instrumental and compositional
studies simultaneously, graduating from the
Liszt Academy of Music in Debrecen in 1969
under the professorship of Sándor Szokolay,
Endre Székely, Attila Bozay, Zsolt Durkó, and
Rudolf Maros. He began his musical career as
an orchestra violinist, and his chamber music
pieces are often played at the studio concert
broadcasts on Hungarian Radio, as well as
internationally in cities within Japan and
Canada. Important premier performances of
note include his Hungarian Clarinet Anthology;
a composition for violoncello and piano (at the Bartók Memorial House in
2008), and Newer Thoughts for String Quartet. He recently gave two Composers’
Nights concerts at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest and at the Bartók
Memorial House, and a large number of his works have been commissioned
by the performers he works with. One of his pieces became a compulsory
performance work for the National Competition of Wind Quintets in 1987. He
is a member of the Hungarian Composers’ Union, and his works have been
performed on countless occasions both in Hungary and abroad.
