Attila Reményi was born in 1959 in Győr, where he began his musical studies. He studied composition and piano at the János Richter Secondary School of Music, going on to study and graduate from the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest in 1982 as a student of Rezső Sugár and Emil Petrovics. He is currently a teacher at the János Richter Secondary School of Music in Győr. He has won numerous prizes at several leading international and Hungarian composition competitions, including: 1st Prizes at the Barlow Competition (the United States, 1987); the Zoltán Kodály VI. Women’s Faculty Meeting Composition Competition (Budapest, 1992); the C. Bechstein Competition (Berlin, 1992), and the Fukui City Composer’s Competition (Japan, 1998). He was also 2nd Prize-winner at: the Composition Competition (Tours, 1982); the National Violin Duo Competition (Vác, 1985), and 3rd Prize-winner at: the National Violin Duo Competition (Vác, 1982), and the Composition Competition (Tours, 1986). He received the Erkel Prize in 1990, and the Bartók–Pásztory Award in 2008. The music writer, János Breuer wrote of him: “Attila Reményi is a composer with an individual, personal voice who respects tradition, especially the musical tradition of our century. He is not necessarily a follower of the avant-garde aspirations and experiments with expressive tools and techniques of the 1980s, means of enriching its individual language.” R
