Bence Kutrik studied composition at the San
Francisco Conservatory of Music, the Univer
sity of Toronto, and the Liszt Academy of Music
in Budapest; he also participated in several
composition masterclasses during that time.
Between 1996 and 2000, he studied piano
with Bujdosóné Klára Pécsy at the Gyula Erkel
School of Music in Budapest. From 2002 until
2003, he studied composition at San Francisco’s
Conservatory of Music as a student of Conrad
Susa. He continued his compositional studies at
the University of Toronto from 2005 until 2010,
with Christos Hatzis, Alexander Rapoport, and
Gary Kulesha. He also studied composition and opera dramaturgy with János
Vajda at the Liszt Academy of Music from 2010 until 2014. He has won numerous
concert and film music awards across both Europe and North America. In 2014,
his composition Four in the Morning was voted “Best Original Music” at the Blue
Whiskey Independent Film Festival in the United States. In 2015, he also won the
Aurora Musis Amica Award for his composition The Immortal Heart. The following
year, he received 1st Prize at the ICOT Composition Competition in Toronto,
Canada. During the same year, his music for the film The Bespoke Tailoring of Mister
Bellamy received the “Best Soundtrack,” award in the short-film category award
at the Wild Rose Independent Film Festival in the United States. In 2018, his
composition Introverted Confessions won first Prize in Austria’s Anton Matasovsky
composition competition for piano solo. In 2018, his work entitled Ritual for
chamber ensemble was listed as the recommended work for broadcasting and
concert presentation for the 65th International Rostrum of Composers. He was
also awarded the 2020 Hungarian Academy of Art’s Scholarship for his opera
based on a Sándor Bródy play called A tanítónő (The School Mistress).
